Marie Curie was born Manya Sklodowska in Warsaw, Poland in 1867. She was a remarkable woman who achieved an incredible number of firsts, including:
- the first woman in Europe to receive a doctorate in science
- the first woman to win a Nobel prize for physics
- the first person ever to win two Nobel prizes
- the first woman head of Laboratory at the Sorbonne in Paris
- and of course the first person to discover radium and polonium and coin the term radioactivity
Terrain: Two ways to get to the box: Starting at Sexton Hollow Road is moderate to difficult, about two miles to the box, first half is mostly uphill and fairly steep. Took us about three hours round trip with much complaining from our five year old. Starting at Moss Hill Road is flatter, shorter and much wetter. Much of this section of the trail is through a trickling creekbed which is muddy and slippery in wet weather.
Clues: Hard!
The list of chemicals:
- sulfur tantalum yttrium
- oxygen nitrogen
- tungsten hydrogen iodine tellurium
- boron lanthanum zirconium? einsteinium
- uranium nitrogen titanium lanthanum?
- molybdenum sulfur(2)
- hydrogen iodine lithium?
- sulfur helium lawrencium? tellurium? erbium
- sulfur oxygen uranium thorium
- iodine sulfur
- "vanadium"
- praseodymium oxygen molybdenum nitrogen titanium? oxygen radium? yttrium
- astatine
- 204-darmstadtium
- indium
- tungsten aluminum lanthanum?
- fluorine oxygen uranium rhenium?
- iron tellurium?
- uranium neodymium erbium
- rhodium? oxygen(2) tellurium? sulfur
Notes:
- No ink pad in the box, make sure you bring your own.
- For this hike, I recommend getting Finger Lakes Trail Conference map M13, which is available here: http://www.fingerlakestrail.org
- Please do not ask me for additional hints without offering a bribe of unpublished clues, hitchhikers, etc.
- Please email me with notes about the box: jelybean.books@comcast.net.
