The Tittabawassee River started long ago as a little creek popping out of the foot of the Ogemaw Hills in West Branch, Michigan. The creek picked up tributaries and became the Tittabawassee River. It rolled for some 80 miles south, converging in Saginaw County with the Shiawassee, Cass, and Flint Rivers. Now it flows out to the Saginaw Bay and beyond to Lake Huron.

During the lumbering era, the Tittabawassee River was used to transport logs and surrounding towns flourished. Later, as factories developed, it sadly became the chemical dumping ground of some industries and became dangerously polluted. Cleanup efforts have been successful to the point that now Freeland, Michigan residents can eat fish caught from the river at the annual “Walleye Festival.” The local paper prints daily limits as to how much walleye may be safely consumed during the festival. Cleanup efforts continue.

Some people think long ago mutants crawled out of the river and a few of them still inhabit the woods! One mutant was recently seen crawling around near the Tittabawassee River in Imerman Park.

To find this mutant, go to Imerman Park in Saginaw Township. Park at Pavilion 4. Go toward the sign about Early History and Park Establishment. Continue on the paved walkway past the Dow rock toward the pavilion. Go on the pavilion and behold the beautiful Tittabawassee River! Continue on the paved path until it ends. Follow the split rail fence until it ends. Next, go around the fence to the other side and walk toward the river along the treeline. You will be facing the Tittabawassee River.

As you approach the river, look to your right. See the footpath? Just to the right of the footpath are some big loopy vines around a tree. The mutant is resting at the base of the tree under some rocks. It is easiest to get to it by going about 3 paces into the footpath and accessing the tree from the wooded side. Please rehide well. The last mutant was taken from the park. I hope this is a better hiding spot! Please log in and let me know how the box is doing.

The park charges a $2.00 per car entry fee from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Bring bug spray in the summer.
