Hurd Park

This 4 box series will take you through some lovely areas of the park with ledges - some up and downhill climbing and a spectacular view from the power lines. In the spring, you may catch our state flower, mountain laurel, in bloom. The stamps were donated and will remain in the park after their debut on Memorial Day 2010.

Drive in the main gate continuing straight passing the right hand turn to the upper pavilion. Look for the first gate on the left hand side of the road. It may be open or closed depending on the time of the year. Park you car near the gate without blocking it.

This will be your starting point. Follow this logging road until you see a fat 2 sister tree with moss growing at its base on the right side of the trail. It has a small green disk with the # 102 on it. Ahead the road curves right. Take the trail on the left guarded by boulders on each side of it. Start heading down hill and when the trail first levels out, you will see ledges on your right and a young beech tree next to a large oak, not too far off the trail. Check out the rock cave behind the beech for The Solemn Salute carved by CW SunSeeker.

Continue on ignoring side trails – down - down – down then you will come to an open area just short of the power lines where a trail goes up a rocky climb or continues straight ahead. Take the rocky road and follow to the top. Stop and enjoy the views. From power tower #376 look due east for a multi-trunk cedar with a smaller cedar to its left. Check the rocks next to the multi-trunk cedar for Lest We Forget carved by BoxLover47.

Continue on the trail, leaving the power line area heading back into the woods. You will pass a a HUGE boulder on your right and eventually meeting up with the main trail. Go left and follow to the Higganum Meadows Trail sign. At the sign, turn and look 30 degrees to nice ledges. Start walking towards them and notice an upright rock on the right with low rocks scattered around. (before going up the hill) Check the overhang behind it to the right for VFW Post 6668 carved by Wood Thrush.

Go back in the direction you came from (walking away from the sign) and stay straight on this main logging road not taking any side trails. You will pass a nice ledge on the left and pass 2 trails on the right. When you get to the second trail on the right, stop and look carefully for a 3 sister tree with a small rock jumble. Then beyond that, you will spy a triple stump sitting on the ledge. Look to the rock cave beneath it for Remember Our Veterans carved by Sahalie. Go back to the main trail and continue out to your car.

Thanks to Butterfly and Lobsta for helping me plant this series. A special thanks to the carvers who donated the Memorial Day stamps. And finally – an extra special thank you to all the Veterans who served in the armed forces for our country.
