These letterboxes were carved from the heart. Recently my spiritual guide was asked to leave the community. As a way of saying goodbye, I choose to leave little gifts. If you choose to take children please remind them that they are in a sacred place. Make sure no people are around, certainly, that no funeral is happening nearby. The cemetery is open from 9-5. I find this cemetery creates perspective.

Start at Sorich Open Space (101w exit Sir Francis Drake, Rt. on San Francisco Blvd.) at the end of San Francisco Blvd. in San Anselmo.
From the parking lot go through the gate and start on the path. Walk over the bridge and continue on your way. At the first switch back (fork in the road) stay right. You will know you are on the right path because you will start to notice the head stones.

At the next fork in the road go right and the sign says Sha’arei Shalom Cemetery.
At the next fork in the road go right again.
Find the Berlin’s headstone, look out at the amazing view of Mount Tam. Feel the insignificance of your problems. Life is short, beauty and splendor abound around you. Continue on the paved road as you round and straighten, look to the left.
The de la Montoyas are at peace. Walk up to Herbert and Catherine, to the left behind the Oleander bushes, wedged between the exposed roots, the evil eye is thwarted by the Hamsa.
This is Box #1

Continue back on the road. You may run into some deer or turkey’s. When you see the large chapel stay to the right (turn right) when the road ends, turn right again.
When you come to the place where 5 roads meet go left then an immediate right. The sign says Kol Shalom Cemetery. Walk up the very steep road. At the benches go into the area up the brick pathway and follow the stars. Where two benches intersect behind the leg of the inner most one you will find the peace you seek.
This is Box #2

You can circle around or come back the way you came. At the Kol Shalom sign make a left then right and follow the sign that says chapel. Go up toward the Chapel then make a hard Left. Pass by the mausoleums, as you make your way through, look for the dead end road where the Foster Family is at rest. To the left of the structure is a fallen piece or two of tree. Underneath are the hands of the priestly blessing. May she bless you and protect you, may she deal kindly and graciously with you and grant you peace.
Box #3

Come back to the main road, follow the paved road to the path, stay left and continue down the path over the bridge back to the gates of the park.

This can also be done as a drive by during 9-5. Take 101 to Central San Rafael. Head west on 5th street in San Rafael till it ends. Go through the Cemetery gate, and turn left. At the fork go left. Continue up the the hill and bear left, you may see a sign that has been ruined by rain that say Kol Shalom cemetery. Go up the big hill until you see the 3 benches. Pull over and park your car. At the benches go into the area up the brick pathway and follow the stars. Where two benches intersect behind the leg of the inner most one you will find the peace you seek.
This is Box #2

Drive back down and turn left drive about 15-20 feet and turn right. You will see signs that say Chapel. When you see the Chapel take a sharp left. Turn right at the 3 crypts and go around the circle. When you are facing Allen's crypt, turn right down the road till it dead ends. This is the Fosters crypt. Face it and see a log, under it is box #3.

Back yourself out and go around the circle again 350 degrees, go down this new road. You will know it is right because you will pass by the resting homes of Johannes Peterson and Lee. Bear left and follow signs to Sha'arei Shalom Cemetery. At the next fork in the road go right again. Park at the top.

Get back into your car, continue back the way you came and out the front gate.
