Collins Natural Sanctuary is located across Cornell and just to the west of the Audubon Society. It's owned by Portland Metro Parks, but managed by the Audubon Society. No dogs allowed, sorry.

Friends of Trees are responsible for the young plantings in the Collins Sanctuary, as well as maintenance performed on mature trees to keep them healthy. You can buy a tree to be planted out here, and maybe even be invited to help plant the trees. See www.friendsoftrees.org for more information.

The directions to the letterbox direct you to follow the North Collins trail. But if the trail is muddy, South Collins is a better, albeit steeper, route. The two meet at the top of the Collins Loop, see trailhead map.

Begin at Collins Trailhead. When you get to North vs. South, choose North @310*. The North Collins Trail meanders through old growth forest and a very dense canopy in places. After about half a mile you'll come to a signpost marking North Collins Trail. If you continue straight, you'll be on South Collins Trail. Take the newer gravel trail back and to the right. When you come to a T, that's the old trail. Turn right. Stay on the meandering newer gravel trail, all the way to the top. (I believe they are trying to restore where the 'old trail' runs. At the top of the gravel trail, turn left onto what I think is the Uthoff Trail. Take 35 steps. Look right to where the closest pair of fraternal twins stand. Box is behind and between.
