Lotso’ Quartz!! Letterbox

2 ways to get to where you’re goin’: both are about 2.3ish miles one way (5 mi. round trip)
This is a little ½ day hike that leads you up to the top of a beautiful Quartz Mtn. with panoramic views! Bring your hat, your lunch and as always-plenty of water.
This way is a little steep, rocky and in full sun. (I would say a level 4 out of 10)
#1. Get to Cathedral Pines Subdivision by going south on White Spar Rd, turn R. on Peterson Lane (just past Comfort Inn Motel), L. on Valley View, veer L. after stop sign, it turns into Cathedral Pines Drive. At the next stop sign go straight down the hill and turn L. on Jack Pine Rd. Park by “End of Pavement” sign, but park on the left side of the road. The trailhead is past the gate and immediately hairpin to the R. Take the forest road uphill….if you come to a fork in the road, veer L. When you get to the base of the mountain and you see the nice smooth trail to the L and the rough, rocky steeper trail to the R. take the L road, it’s easier travelling, the views are better and it[‘s really no farther. You want to get to what looks like a vehicle turn-a-round (at about the 1.82 mi. mark) Again, looking at the top of the hill from this point, take the L trail up (the one between the 2 tall tree stumps), again, when faced with a fork-stay on the bigger trail, veer L , then staying on the bigger trail-veer R , then you will come to an area that looks like 3 different trails-go up the middle one-it’s a little steep and rocky but ok. Then you will see a couple of very thin rocky trails on your R leading up to the top-I prefer the one that is just a touch farther than the first. From here you can get yourself to the different lookouts. When you get to the lookout that has a nice little tree over the rocks-turn around and look behind you-see the dead tree that is lying down in front of the juniper? See the stump of that tree to your R? Doesn’t it look like the perfect place to hide a LB?? Be CAREFUL reaching behind and under..critters may lurk. Speaking of lurkers…STEALTH is the name of the game here-I find this to be a very popular area so PLEASE try to retrieve & re-hide discreetly! I think the views are worth the trip!

For those of you using a GPS: LB located at N34° 30.090˝
W112 30.015˝

#2: Start at the Sierra Prieta trailhead off of Copper Basin Rd-this is a much easier, smoother hike or mountain bike ride. Copy and paste the link below to your browser for directions:
