The Stone House is located on Main Street. It was built in 1837 by John S. Wells. He moved to Lancaster in 1836 to practice law. He sold the property in 1846 to a Mr. Burns, who then sold it in 1853 to John Hopkinson, a farmer.

Today, it is owned by Sally Gaynor Knecht and her family. The Stone House is the only granite house in Coos County. It was built from one great big granite boulder found in Northumberland which was left over from the ice age. The boulder the Stone House was built from got cut into blocks. The house is entirely lined with brick. The Stone House has a beautiful spiral stairway and has five fireplaces. The hall is split in half by an arch.

Granite is a type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock. It can be pink, dark gray and black in color. After the last ice age huge deposits of granite were visable. These boulders needed to be moved for farming and building settlements. Boulders were cut on site and moved by oxen and sledges to building sites. Granite blocks were used to make coutertops, basements, steps to a house, houses, curbing and sidewalks, and flooring.

The Stone House is an example of Greek Revival architecture. Greek Rivival is a type of archetecture with pedimented gables, a symmetrical shape, a heavy cornice, and a wide plain frieze. It has an entry porch with columns, decorative plaster, and narrow windows around the front door.
