This is the first of eight boxes in our newest series which we are dedicating to my 2 granddaughters, the children’s cousins, who are currently living on Oahu, and who we miss very much.

From the intersection of Route 44 and Route 198 (Phoenixville) go west on Rte. 44 for 8/10ths of a mile. As soon as you cross Bigelow Brook, park on the right side of the road by the blue oval sign marking the Natchaug Trail. Enter the trail on the same side of the road and follow the blue blazes. For a while the trail runs parallel to a stone wall but then curves toward the left and goes up hill.

Eventually you will come to a place where the wall that was running parallel to the river curves up the hill and the trail crosses it. There is a large boulder in the opening which you must step on to pass through. When you have crossed the wall, STOP. (The trail takes a sharp left and goes up hill along the wall, but you don’t.) Instead, turn right and go about 6 steps, (6 to 9 feet) along the back of the wall. The Palm Tree Box will be in an opening in the wall, under a large, moss covered rock.

When you are done stamping you can continue exploring or retrace your steps to return to your car. This walk should take less than an hour, (plus stamping time.)

Box #2, “Catching a Wave” can be found on the section of the Natchaug Trail on the other side of Route 44 from where you parked your car.

We hope you enjoy this series. You might also enjoy our first set of 6 letterboxes called “Life Is A 3 Ring Circus.” They are all easy walks good for young children.
