NOTE: THIS BOX HAS BEEN DESTROYED. I WILL UPDATE THIS PAGE WHEN I HAVE A CHANCE TO REPLACE IT.

This box was planted in honor of Earth Day.

“We did not inherit the earth from our ancestors; we are borrowing it from our children.” ~Chief Seattle.

When you go looking for these letterboxes, please bring a garbage bag to collect trash along the way. Every little bit makes a difference!

The forest preserve that these letterboxes are located in is named after a Native American woman who was married to Stephen Mack. The forest preserve is located off the road of the same name.

Box #1
When you get to this preserve, park in the first lot and find the trail that starts at a white arbor. Follow this trail around through the coniferous forest. Stay to your right. The trail opens up into some fields. Stay on the trail, heading West. When you get to a trail split and see a blue trail marker, stop and take a compass reading of 260 degrees and continue down the path in that direction toward the body of water that’s name is synonymous with stone. Not far past the trail marker, you will noticed some downed logs on the South side of the trail. Past the standing tree that touches the logs (be careful or you might get jabbed!) go about 5 steps in toward the logs. The first letterbox can be found hidden in a crevasse in the downed logs. This box only has a stamp. Continue on to the next one to find a book to stamp.

Box #2 - Gone Missing! I will replace this box as soon as I can!

Continue on the path that goes down by the river. Make sure you stop to sit by the river and feel a sense of appreciation and connection for nature. When you get to a trail split, keep left. You will come upon a large shag bark hickory and beyond that another trail split. Go East here. Hike until the trail turns sandy and stop to look at the amazing trees here. Continue on. When you find a tree seeing stars, continue straight. At the next turn shortly after, go right. You will go over a small wooden bridge. When you come to the next bridge, stop and look. There is a natural bridge not far from it. The letterbox is hidded in the roots.

Note: There is another letterbox hidden in this forest preserve. Make sure you print out directions for that one before you head out.
