As a family we enjoy bikeriding through the local forest preserves. Cook County has many bike trails and acres and acres of prairie and natural space to enjoy. Our children nicknamed this particular area of preserve "Grasshopper Forest" because every time we crossed a particular bridge on the trail it would be covered in grasshoppers.

Begin your quest by entering the forest preserve at the Coopers Hawk Woods Family Picnic Area entrance which is located on 135th Street, about one block east of Ridgeland Avenue. Park in the small lot located down the drive, and proceed to the entrance of the bike trail. You will see an orange arrow on the trail marker. Go left (southeast) on the bike trail. The trail makes a left turn shortly after you start walking. Keep walking toward the forest. Along the way you will pass an upside down "Mile 8" sign in the concrete. This means you are in the right place! As you approach the treeline, the trail curves to the right.

When you get to the bridge over the creek, stop. You can check for grasshoppers later! For now, don't cross the bridge. Instead, look to your right. There is a path along the bank of the creek marked on the ground with a rock and a wood beam. Take that path and follow it along the bank. Pass under an arch of branches. Watch out for raccoons! We saw some in the water when we planted this box. Continue on until you see the berm, or crescent-shaped hill, ahead of you. Follow the base of the hill around to the right until you come to a 2 foot high rotted tree stump. From this stump take 10 steps forward to the large fallen tree ahead. The grasshopper has hopped into the base of the trunk, behind some bark and a rock. Be sure that the deer on the hill are your only witnesses! Rehide well, and thanks for visiting!

By the way! There is a special treat for the first to find! Something to remember your hike by!

**Quick note: We don't recommend cutting through the prairie above the berm to get back to your vehicle. Our first-to-find folks tipped us off that there is a family of coyotes that may reside there, and they are protective of their pups. Please return to your car by way of the trail you came on, just to be safe!
