June 6th, 1918
Bois de Belleau, France

In North America and Europe June 6th is known as D-Day, the day in 1944 that the Allies landed in Normandy, France. But for the generation that fought the First World War, June 6th marked the beginning of a far different battle.

On May 27th, 1918 the Germans launched an offensive against the French Sixth Army. The Germans advanced thirty five miles and as the French retreated the U.S. 2nd Division, which included 3 Marine regiments, moved up. By June 4th the German advance had been stopped, but Paris was in jeopardy of being captured.

On June 5th the French commander responsible for the sector ordered the Marines of the 2nd Division to recapture an area know as Belleau Wood. The French believed that the Germans only held a small corner of the woods. What they didn’t know was that the Germans not only held the entire area, they had turned the woods into a strong hold.

Clues:

From the Tale of Two Cannons letterbox continue on the trail. At the next intersection turn left.

At the next intersection turn left once again. As you go down the hill look for a group of three large rocks on the right.

From the rocks take twenty steps at 180° to a side trail. From this point walk into the woods at 210° until you come to a tall sump with a fallen log at its base. The letterbox is hiden in the base of the stump.
