Boston, Massachusetts
September, 1774

In early September, 1774 General Gage, commander of the British detachment stationed in Boston, ordered the confiscation of munitions that the colonial militia had stored in Charlestown. This action touched off several responses from the colonials, the most aggressive coming on September 16th.

In a newly constructed gun house on Boston Common were two brass field cannons belonging to the Boston Artillery Company. These cannons were purchased by the Massachusetts General Court for the company in 1766. They were two of four cannons in use by the company and were a source of great pride.

The company’s commanding officer, Major Adiono Paddock, a known Loyalist, was planning to turn the cannons over to the British. Rather than allow the cannons to be transferred to the British military the cannons were stolen from the gun house as the British were changing the guard and smuggled out of Boston.

For the British, having the cannons stolen from right under their noses was exceedingly embarrassing. The British immediately began work on the recovery of the cannons. By the spring of 1775 British intelligence had discovered where the missing cannons were hidden. On the morning of April 19th, 1775 an expedition was mounted to recover the cannons.

Clues:
From Gates of Fire continue east down the trail. Watch for a bridge on the right.

Take the bridge and follow the trail up hill to the high voltage power line tower. Go to the west leg of the tower. From the west leg look for a group of four rocks at 330°.

From the group of four rocks look for a rotting log at 260°.

From the rotting log look for a tree with four trunks at 280°. The letterbox will be hidden in a cleft among the trunks.
