First you need to figure out where Matt the Rat’s “Elk Mound” which unfortunately isn’t there anymore. There is a replica of it in the castle box. I wanted the idea there because this was our second find.

“Ascend the eponymous prominence. Stand for a moment of silence for the dead letter officers.”

The box is just right of the watchful eye, stuck inside the backside of the guard.

Closed from October 31 through May 1, but people have walked up the driveway before. It’s a good work out.

History: Did you know at 1220 feet, this is the second highest point in Wisconsin? This may have been a look out and meeting place of the War Council of the Chippewa and Black Hawk Indians. It was also said a great herd of elk roamed the hill. Castle was built in 1938, giving work to the local men by the Works Progress Administration. The three floors had a kitchen, dining room and observation deck. The park once had fireplaces and outhouses. In 1994 the Village Board and High Schools worked to restore safety and reopen the park.
