Palmer-Taylor Preserve
From Portland take route 66 east for about three miles. Turn left on Middle Haddam Road and go about a quarter of a mile to the stop sign. Continue another three quarters of a mile and turn left into parking area next to a barn.

Follow red blazes uphill behind the map board and when it splits take the right trail paralleling the road, eventually crossing the road (be careful). The trail goes straight across but on the opposite side it might be difficult to find. Follow a rock lined path, twisting and turning until you walk along the edge of a pond. After going up a few steps at the end of the pond, bear left and follow orange to a three way intersection (passing a set of stairs on the left, leading to private property). Go right , cross a brook (during the wet season) stay on red, cross an unmarked path, follow a stone wall on the right and then a brook, also on the right. In front of you you'll see a very large tunnel (you don't have to go through it). Turn right before the tunnel, cross the stream and go uphill. There will be many ledges on your way up and when you reach the top you'll have a bit of ledge underfoot followed by a bit of mossy ledge also underfoot. Continue on with ledge underfoot watching for ledge down on your right. With mossy ledge underfoot look down and right for 4-sister skinny maples. Walk down and pass these to the birch on the ledge look in the roots of the birch tree behind a trap door.

One mile round trip. No ink in box.
