On the Fly #1

On the Fly #1 is located in Aman Park. Aman Park is located 6 miles West of Grand Rapids on Lake Michigan Drive (M-45). Take Lake Michigan Dr. West from Standale or East from Allendale. Park anywhere space is available. A park map may be helpful (see link below).

Please rehide our boxes better than you found them.

From the parking areas, the nuthatch was last seen flying North towards the yellow gate. He took the trail with the most choices. He flew along the path most travelled until he came upon another post. It was very windy and there were many dead and downed trees. He decided it would be safer to keep moving, but which way to go? He decided he would A-B-SEE what was ahead. Flying along a considerable distance, he saw one railroad tie, two. Down the hill he went. He flew low through a row of beech trees on his left and right, but decided it was best to keep going since the beech trees were speaking a language he wasn’t accustomed to. Across the bridge he went. He came upon another trail marker and stopped to get his bearings. He took the trail at 350 degrees to go “see” what was there. He flew through the eerie graveyard of the fallen giants, but it gave him the creeps so he flew on. When he saw the creek on his right he began to think this might be a good spot to settle, but looked to his left and felt like he was too close to being somewhere he shouldn’t. Since he was a law-abiding citizen, he flew on. The trail headed down slightly and he spotted an underground slinky. The trickle of the stream was relaxing. Could this be the spot? From the middle of the slinky on the trail, he looked back at 250 degrees and flew up the small incline. He perched in the first tree that was holding onto the bank for dear life. He then flew 20 steps forward reaching a stump where he stopped to rest. From the stump, he surveyed the area and decided the depression below would be a nice place to settle. He spotted two stumps, but which one to choose? The stump at 340 degrees looked the most welcoming and the back side of the stump looked to be the best place to nest. Can you find his nest?

After rehiding the box well, the quickest way back to the parking area is back the way you came. If you brought along a map there are many trail options that will lead you back to the parking area. If you continue on past the slinky, there is approximately a 1 mile loop that will bring you back to where you currently are. The hike is very pretty, but sometimes wet. Be sure to check out some of the other boxes located in Aman Park.
