Find your way to Saw Mill Road off of Atkins Street in Middletown. Park on the right, just before the pond. The pond is an interesting area with Red Wing Blackbirds, Swans, Canadian Geese, Wood Ducks, and Mallards.
Back track a little way to the double orange blazes where your search will begin (You will be on the right side of the pond.) Be careful, there are some tiny tree stumps hidden in the leaves, evidence of beaver activity. Follow the trail along the marshy edge of the pond and as the trail turns right, still skirting the pond, you will notice a three sister hickory stump. One of the sisters is about 4 feet tall. Hiding in the sisters is Heron.
Continue on the trail and as the trail curves right again, you will see a large gnarly tree with an orange blaze on your left. Mallard is hiding there.
Follow the trail out to the road. You should be across from a white house. Turn right and walk up the road past your car and a large beaver lodge on the right. You will pass Kettle Creek Farm and Cat X-ing on the left. Re-enter the trail at the double orange blazes just past the wood duck box.
Follow the trail along the edge of the pond. As you pass the dam, where the beaver have also been active, you will see a sawed off telephone pole on your left. Bushwhack up to a small hollow. The Swan and logbook are hiding at the foot of a tree with interesting black bark.
Do not turn right with the orange blazes, but keep going straight on the wide path to the road. Turn left and walk down to your car.
Stay tuned for another series that will blend with this one.
