Whiskeytown Lake is a park filled with hiking trails, interesting historical sites, water-related recreation opportunities and, naturally, letterboxes. For those willing to rough it, the quiet, primitive campsites here are far removed from the overflowing, developed sites along the shore. They can be reserved at the Visitor Center ten miles west of Redding. You can also pay the required day use fee and get a park map here.

To the trailhead: Go west of Redding ten miles on Highway 299. Turn left at the Visitor Center and drive toward Brandy Creek Beach. Just past the entrance to the beach, go left on the gravel road. Continue past the junction for Sheep Camp. There is a large parking area with a brown trash can just before the end of the road. The Brandy Creek Falls trailhead is just ahead on the left side of the road. The hike is 1.6 miles one way to the falls with a 680’ elevation gain. The trail may not be accessible during high water.

To the letterbox: This box has a lovely view of a small cascade through the trees. In its front yard stands a triple trunked tree (two living, one dead) and a rock slab right in the trail. The tiny box lives behind a mossy boulder to the left of the path.
