The Sea Elephant, or Elephant Seal as it is more commonly known, gets its name from the large nose of the adult male which resembles the trunk of an elephant. The Northern species ranges all over the Pacific coast of United States, Canada and Mexico, and a good place to see them is at Ano Nuevo State Park, since it is the site of the largest mainland breeding colony in the world. Since visitation is restricted, this box is not located here, but is in the Fitzgerald Marine Preserve further north. I highly recommend visiting both!

Directions:
From Hwy 1 in Moss Beach, go west on California Ave to its end at the Fitzgerald Marine Preserve and park by the picnic area.

Clues:
From California Ave, go west across North Lake street to bridge at beginning of trail heading into woods. After crossing bridge, go right at fork and climb the hill. Soon a fence will be on your right, and you continue following it as trail heads west to a great view. Continue on trail south following fence about 200 yards until it begins to descend. You will have a view of a sand beach in front of you. Turn left (east) and go 20 steps off trail to a large, lone pine tree. Continue 10 more steps, then turn right and go 15 steps into a cove of small trees and bushes. Look left for a multi-trunk pine tree. Microbox is within trunks under needles. Please replace as described.
