***** Down for maintenance *****

Within the Humboldt Redwoods State Park is the Rockefeller Forest, purchased with a $2,000,000 bequest originally to the Save-the-Redwoods League by John D. Rockefeller Jr. These are old growth redwoods and purportedly some of the finest stands anywhere in the world. Within the 10,000 acre forest is a short impressive walk on its outskirts, easy to reach by car and less visited than many parts of the redwood forests.

One common plant is the thimbleberry, a not particularly tasty but certainly edible berry. Well, it’s not exactly a berry, but that’s a story for another time.

For this letterbox you are traveling to the Rockefeller Loop, a short drive either from the Avenue of the Giants or Highway 101 slightly north and west of Weott where Redwoods State Park headquarters is located. They have a nice museum at their visitors’ center and clean restroom. So either from headquarters or 101 where Rockefeller Forest is posted drive west under the freeway to 1.4 mile on Mattole Road. On the left will be a steep and narrow access road down to the Rockefeller Loop and Lower Bull Creek Flat. Drive down and park. Take the Rockefeller Loop proceeding right. At the Burlington sign stay left walking 17 steps at 110 degrees. Note the horses head on your left. Reach in the poor thing’s eye for the Rockefeller Thimbleberry letterbox. Then complete the loop for the short .65 mile experience.

Thanks for coming, close everything up tightly against the moisture and please be discreet.
