Glenn H. McCarthy, the "King of the Wildcatters," was a plucky independent oil operator best known for building the famous Shamrock Hotel, indulging in fist-fights at his Cork Club and being the model for Edna Faber's Texas oilman Jett Rink in her novel "Giant." He was born in Beaumont, Texas in 1907 and began working as a water boy at the age of eight in the oilfields. As an adult he decided to enter the oil business and first discovered oil at Anahuac. Between 1932 and 1942 he struck oil 38 times and became quite wealthy and flamboyant. In his later years, McCarthy lived a low-profile life in a two-story house near La Porte and died on December 26, 1988. He was buried in Glenwood Cemetery near this microbox.

Directions:
From I10 in Houston, go south on Studemont for 0.5 mile, then left on Washington Ave for 0.3 mile. Turn right into Glenwood Cemetery and park by the office.

Clues:
Find the Lee family stone monument just south of the office and locate Glenn McCarthy's grave at the front left. Closer to the monument is the grave of Gene Tierney, an American film and stage actress. Walk behind the left side of the monument and find the tombstone for Colonel Ben Terry, leader of Terry's Texas Rangers during the Civil War. With your back to his tombstone, walk east across the road past the tombstone for Meadows to the one for Gould. Go 6 steps behind it and a little right to a multi-trunk tree on the edge of a ravine. The microbox is within trunks under rocks and leaves. Please replace as described and be careful.
