This box made its debut at the 2010 Dead of Winter gathering in Rockford, IL.

Location: See Dead of Winter Seclusion clue to determine location
Time: 1-2 hours depending on trail conditions & your hiking speed.
Distance: Approximately 2 miles roundtrip
Terrain: Wooded trail with some hills.

Start out by crossing the street to find the trailhead. To find the party in the dead of winter, my first suggestion would be to avoid the bikes… You’ll be twisting your way up to the top, especially challenging in the snow! Keep your course through the intersection and enjoy the winter wonderland until you reach the Kettle Loop sign. (You may want to stop for some Dead of Winter Seclusion along the way.)

Not everyone is looking for seclusion in the dead of winter. Some people want to “liven things up” with a party. If you’re interested in joining the party, continue on after leaving kettleland until you reach the color of snow. At this point you must abjure the trail sinister and follow the opposite path. As you search for the sounds of a good time, you will pass between a large fallen tree and cross under a prong of three. After diving down and passing eight sisters on the right, watch for the next tree with blazes. Can you hear the party? Take three steps more and sight 50 degrees to espy a fallen tree some distance away. Look beneath the trunk to find your party host.

After the party is over, continue along the path, taking a left at the intersection with yellow. Follow yellow to return to your vehicle.

As always, we’d appreciate a status update message if you look for the box. Thanks!

Hike length: 1-2 miles
