This box made its debut at the 2010 Dead of Winter gathering in Rockford, IL.

Well, in the dead of winter you should have a bit of spare time to solve some puzzles, right? You will need to solve one puzzle to determine the starting location and several puzzles to determine the compass bearing.

Here’s a link to the puzzles: www.letterboxing.homestead.com/DeadofWinter.html

Location: ? [Solve puzzle]
Time: 30-45 minutes depending on trail conditions & your hiking speed.
Distance: Approximately 1 mile roundtrip (2 miles if you continue on to the Dead of Winter Party)
Terrain: Wooded trail with some hills.

Start out by crossing the street to find the trailhead. To find a secluded spot in the dead of winter, my first suggestion would be to avoid the bikes… You’ll be twisting your way up to the top, especially challenging in the snow! Keep your course through the intersection and enjoy the winter wonderland. You’ll know when you reach the kettles. Now it’s time to get off the beaten path. A bearing of ? [Solve puzzle] degrees shows you a V-tree in a more secluded area. Make your way there, and then look under the trunk of the nearby fallen tree. Your secluded spot is near the base.

Please reseal and replace carefully so the spot is kept secure for future seekers of seclusion. You can now retrace your steps, or continue onward to find the more lively Dead of Winter Party!

As always, we’d appreciate a status update message if you look for the box. Thanks!

Hike length: 1-2 miles
