Start at the North Lake Whatcom trailhead. Use the main trail by the garbage can and doggie bags. Follow the trail thru a moss covered forest looking for huge stumps with notches cut out where loggers would place their planks to stand. Carefully walk over a sometimes slippery footbridge. When the trail hits Lake Whatcom, turn left and head down the trail after reading the interpretive signs. Look for waterfalls and signs of beaver. Pass the .5 mile marker.

When you see a creek on your left, do not go over the bridge. Instead, veer right and from bridge take 4 paces toward the lake. Take a sharp right after the big cedar. Head up the small hill between 2 cedar trees. Find the first flat rock and stand on it and step over fallen log to where 4 trees are clumped together. Find the letter box in front of the Hemlock tree.
