Last summer our family received a new unfamiliar book thanks to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, "The Gruffalo" by Julia Donaldson. Dolly’s foundation provides FREE books to children every month from their birth until age 5. To learn more about this awesome project and to see if it available in your area check out http://www.dollysimaginationlibrary.com/

The story of the Gruffalo goes SOMETHING like this.
A little mouse was headed out to see the NATURE. Behind the CENTER he decided to follow the River and collect some Acorns on his long journey in the woods. He saw some steps, but went left and enjoyed the beautiful trail. Mouse liked this trail and continued on until he found a fence and had to make a choice. Mouse decided to head west until he met the fox. Fox descended down from the hill at the 2CC marker. The fox asked where mouse was headed and wanted to know if mouse would have lunch with him in his den at the top of the hill. Mouse quickly declined, stating he was waiting here to have lunch with the Gruffalo. When Mouse described the Gruffalo as having terrible tusks, terrible claws, terrible teeth and terrible jaws, and also that his favorite food was roasted fox, Fox quickly sped off up the hill. Mouse continued on to find more Acorns knowing there was no such thing as a Gruffalo.

When mouse continued on the trail he came to the top of a steep hill. He paused to catch his breath, and here he noticed a tree on his left that was Owl’s home. Owl swooped down and offered mouse a cup of tea in his tree top house, but mouse explained he was waiting to meet the Gruffalo. He explained to the Owl that the Gruffalo had knobby knees, turned out toes, a poisonous wart at the end of his nose and his favorite food was Owl ice cream. Owl quickly flew back up to his tree, and Mouse continued on knowing there was no such thing as a Gruffalo.

At the next intersection Mouse was trying to decide which way to go when, he noticed a large snake lying on the side of the other trail. The snake asked if mouse wanted to have a feast in his house, but mouse let him know he was waiting to have a feast with a Gruffalo. The snake was confused, so Mouse let him know that a Gruffalo has orange eyes, a black tongue and Sharp purple prickles that cover his back, and also loves snakes for a snack! Snake went back to his trail, and mouse continued finding Acorns as he knew there was no such thing as a Gruffalo.

Mouse then came to a big clearing. He stopped and looked ahead. Across the clearing, he couldn’t believe his eyes….There stood a GIANT Gruffalo. It had terrible claws, and terrible teeth and terrible jaws. He saw knobby knees and turned-out toes, and even a poisonous wart on his nose. His eyes were orange and his tongue was black, and yes he even had purple prickles down his back. Mouse walked to the Gruffalo. Gruffalo wanted to take back to his house which was at 340 degrees, and have the mouse as a snack but Mouse explained how HE was the scariest creature of all. They went back toward the clearing opening the Mouse demonstrated just how he was the scariest as they walked to the Gruffalo’s house. They saw a big rock that the snake quickly hid behind, and a whole in a tree that the Owl quickly hid in, and a big den at the base of a fallen tree, which the fox dove into. The backside of the lumber attached to this large hole is where the Gruffalo calls home. If you are brave enough to meet the Gruffalo seek him there.
