We have been visiting the Island together for years now. It is our tradition, on our first night, to go down to the Fort at 10:00 p.m. to hear Taps. From there we head out for our annual “Stumble ‘Round the Point”. It used to be a treacherous walk, but Mission Point Resort has made a number of improvements including a nice path with lighting. We love this walk at night (take a flashlight) but for the faint-hearted or feeble-footed we recommend a daylight trip.

In the 1820’s, Mission House was built by Reverend William Ferry. It was his intention to house and educate the Native children. When he established Mission Church, a few years later, the southeast end of the Island became known as “Mission Point”.

During the 1950’s the Moral Re-Armament came to the Island promoting love, unselfishness, purity, and honesty. The MRA began construction of what was to become their World Conference Center starting with the Theater, and later adding Huron Court, Main Lodge, Straits Lodge, and the movie production Sound Stage which Universal Studios leased in 1979 to film “Somewhere in Time”.

After the MRA relocated, the property changed hands and purposes several times before being purchased in 1987 and renamed Mission Point Resort. With its extensive renovations, it has become one of the Island’s best known destinations. Today you can visit the Tower Museum: 8 floors of Mackinac history ($5 for adults, $3 for children), catch a movie at the Island’s only theater (check with the Resort for features and showings), or just relax on the front lawn (a great place for star-gazing). Whatever you choose, be sure to be on the lookout for the Point’s signature red roof!

To find Mission Point Box:
Head east from the Fort, until you come to Shoreline Trail. Turn here, keeping the green on your left and the blue on your right. Enjoy the walk. When the Shoreline rejoins the Lake, turn left and count off 38 paces. General Jackson will walk at your right side. When you reach your destination, turn to face the General and take a compass reading of 270 degrees. A large stone sentry should be at your back. Beneath the cedar, one stands alone. Behind it, four more guard what you seek.

This is a well-traveled area, PLEASE use stealth when locating and replacing the box. We recommend moving away from the Keep to enjoy the contents. For privacy, move just ahead and seek shelter from road traffic behind a group of cedars.
