Stand Point

Where glaciers carved a channel over 16,000 years ago
And skyward eagles watched Squaxin gather below
I am standing nearby, lanky and still
With a long straight dagger-like bill
My long dark slender legs
hold a gracefully feathered blue four foot frame
Patience is my game;
Have you guessed my name?
I impale my food, I don’t bite
“FWAARK” are my vocals preflight
Other than that,
I am quiet and I see
On a distant shore
a Squaxin welcome pole greeting me
Gifted as an expression of appreciation
where gentle loving work is done
He is far taller than me
welcoming each new sun
Seven red & black paddles are seven inlets for the tribe
Open hands gesture “come into my heart, you are welcome” vibe
Follow my lead, and let tranquility prevail
Serene reflection will tell a tale

Stand Point Clues:

To begin your own letterbox excavation, find the land site located off Highway 101 and Mud Bay Road. Turn on Madrona Beach Road. You will journey past a shipwreck of a café, and a storage site for sacred possessions. Survey CAREFULLY, as not to pass the Mud Bay Park and Ride lot. Enter the lot.

Locate William Cannon Footpath at the North West corner of the lot. Find two large white boulders marking the entrance to the trailhead. Spend a few minutes at the interpretive center to learn of the Squaxin Island tribe. Could you be standing where tribe members hunted, fished, and gathered over 700 years ago? Mud Bay Louie really shook things up and created what church? And who was Mud Bay Sam?

Tread quietly along the footpath, listening carefully to the offerings of this rich environment. Follow round the bend to the right. There will be a creek bed to your left. About a hundred yards from the entrance, your trail will become one with the forest. Careful of the Holly wrapped tree! And don’t forget to admire the beautiful gathering of Madrona just a few paces away. Continue your curvy journey until you locate a Y in the trail, bear left. Discover a giant among trees. Say hello to Mr. Douglas Fir
as he extends from the banks edge.

Take some time to admire the glory of the magnificent surroundings. After respectful contemplation of your environment, turn your attention to the stumpy friend of Douglas Fir. Search the base on which Stumpy stands. To excavate your own treasure, look for the uncommonly angled rock. Without disturbing the surrounding site, carefully remove the rock and expose the dig. Scoop away dirt and debris until your “artifact” is recovered.

After analyzing and taking skillful impressions of your discovery, please replace all items carefully for the next budding archeologist to recover.
