Welcome to our first letterbox. We discovered letterboxing on a Labor Day Weekend retreat with our Dog Scout Troop, Troop 171 – the Redfern Ramblers of Harrisburg, PA. At the retreat, we began working on a Letterboxing 1 merit badge that requires a dog and person team to work together to find five letterboxes and plant one. During the three-day weekend, we were successful in finding five boxes, so this letterbox represents the culmination of our badge! In the process, we also gained appreciation and enjoyment of a fun new hobby. Who knew that following clues to search for a box with a rubber stamp and a log book could be so much fun? We hope you enjoy your search for our first treasure!

Follow the clues below to find the general location of the box:

Your destination starts with East and ends in the West. To discover the name of the park where the treasure awaits, answer these two questions.
First, which of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties comes first alphabetically?

Second, what was the first name of Lucy’s husband on “I Love Lucy’? (Hint: To get the correct spelling of the second part of this park’s name, substitute the fourth letter of the character’s name with the third letter of the alphabet, and the last letter of the character’s name with the ninth letter of the alphabet.)

Have you solved the puzzle? Then get your dog, your stamp, your logbook and your compass, and head for the car! Don’t forget a leash for your dog, cleanup bags, a portable bowl, and some water and treats.

Directions to the park:
Follow I-81 to Exit 61 (Old Exit 20)) for PA-944 East (Wertzville Road). Proceed east on Wertzville Road for 2.1 miles to the intersection of Wertzville Road and East Penn Drive. Turn right at the light and proceed 0.5 mile to the next light at the intersection of East Penn Drive and Magaro Road. Turn right onto Magaro Road. The park entrance is on the left.

Clues
Park in front of a place where imagination is king. Then pause for a moment of reflection as you take your place among frozen children at play in a ring. When you have paid your respects, head east to a path where two primary colors meet. Stay on this road until you must make a choice. Following the trail that is “true” will keep you on course for finding the treasure you seek. Proceed south on the path that is “true.” Where your trail meets with a path that is the same color as the one taken by Dorothy and her friends on their journey through Oz, walk up a steep incline and continue in the direction that geese fly to escape the cold. Next, follow Dorothy’s favorite road past the pavilion. Where this path meets a blue trail, follow blue south. Then turn on the yellow trail, heading in the same direction as the sun when it starts its journey each day. Next, head north on the yellow path, around the restrooms. When your “true” path rejoins the route, follow it until you arrive at a car that you would find at the end of a train. This train car rode the rails back in the 1940s as part of one of Pennsylvania’s most important industries. Now it serves as the hiding place for your treasure! To find what you seek, walk to a place on the right side of the train car where you could get a leg up. (But please do not actually climb on it.) Just reach inside to find your prize. After your search is over, re-hide the box well in its original location for the next seeker, being careful to replace everything as you found it, and tie the bag shut. Then follow the blue path past the treasure’s home and back to the parking lot.
