My husband is an avid runner and we tend to travel out of town quite often so he can compete in races. Since my daughter and I are usually left to wander around town while the race is going on, I thought this would be a great opportunity to plant some letterboxes. I decided to start a running theme and plant a letterbox in each town we travel to for my husband’s races. Although the Grand Rapids marathon was not “out of town” for us, we planted a letterbox along the race route anyway. Miles 11 and 12 of the marathon were run through part of Millennium Park in Grand Rapids.

About Millennium Park: The park address is 1415 Maynard Ave SW, Grand Rapids. Trails are paved and can be used for walking, running, cycling and in-line skating. Pets are allowed on leashes. There is no fee to use the park or the trails. The only fee is if you choose to enter the beach area. The park is officially “open” May 1 though October 31, from 7 am till dusk. Trails can still be used during the off-season, but be sure to check the sign at the entrance gate to find out when the gates will be locked, so your car doesn’t get locked inside. If you are unsure of the closing time, or arrive when the gates are locked, there are a number of spots along the roads near the entrance (on Maynard, Veteran’s Memorial Drive or Riverbend Dr), where you can park and walk into the park. For more information about the park, visit their website

CLUES:

Enter the park from Maynard Ave, between Butterworth and Veteran’s Memorial Drive. If possible, drive all the way to the SW end of the road that goes through the parking lots and park somewhere in one of the last lots. You will go through a round-about and past the entrance to the beach area. During summer months, the parking lots get full and you may need to park on a nearby road and walk in. After parking, walk to the far SW end of the parking lot road. Follow the cement path at 240° that goes between 2 bodies of water. Just beyond the water, you will come to a triangle intersection. 2 lefts are NOT right. Stay on the path until you are almost even with the beginning of the beach area across the lake. On the left side of the path, you’ll see a square blue pole approximately 3 ft high. Continue on path for 3 paces past the blue pole (1 pace = left plus right). 7 paces into the woods is a hollow stump. Your prize is inside. Please try to be discreet while stamping, as these trails can be very busy with runners and bikers, and you are in full view of the beach area. Recover with sticks and leaves.

When finished, please make sure the box is closed at all 4 corners and concealed well. If you notice the book getting full, please email me so I can replace it.
