Pack Monadnock and Miller State Park Muncha Muncha LB

[South] Pack Monadnock is not as tall as Grand Monadnock but with its rocky terrain it is a challenging hike. Pack is a Native American word meaning “little.”

From Milford, travel west on NH 101; from Peterborough travel east on NH 101. The entrance to Pack Monadnock and Miller State Park is on the northern side of NH 101 across from Temple Mountain Ski Area, near the Temple-Peterborough town line. During the summer, a usage fee is charged.

The trail starts from the top right hand side of the parking lot, when you enter. Soon after hiking a short distance the trail splits the yellow blazes – Wapack Trail goes one way and the blue goes the other way, take the Wapack Trail with yellow blazes. Follow the Wapack Trail to the summit, upon arriving at the summit stop to eat lunch at the picnic tables and climb up the look-out tower. From the tower on a good day you can see Boston and the White Mountains almost 100 miles away. After you climb down the tower go to the ranger’s cabin to refill your water bottles.

To start your descent, take the blue blaze Circle Trail starting near the ranger’s cabin (this is the trail you saw from the beginning). After hiking for a while you will come to rock wall going across the path. Stand where the rock wall and the path meet, turn around and retrace your last 35 steps along the path in the direction. Facing 320 degrees from the path, spot the ledge at the lowest rock. Walk 14 paces to stand on the flat rock, look in the crevice for your prize. Return to the trail and head for your car.
