Terrain: A field of weeds, but not difficult

This is a fast find. It is a large stamp. Bring colored markers.

Park in the Milwaukee County Extension parking lot in the visitors’ section. (9501 W Watertown Plank Rd). Head north and cross the street. Be extremely careful, as traffic is heavy on Watertown Plank. Walk up the hill to the large building at the top of the hill. Presently, it houses the offices of the Milwaukee Park System, but it was built in 1848 and was the Milwaukee County Home for Dependant Children. In other words, it was an orphanage. If you are letterboxing on a weekday and the doors are open, go in! It is an absolutely beautiful building with wonderful pictures of the Milwaukee park system and other historical pictures of Milwaukee throughout its three floors.

After touring the building if you are fortunate, go out the front door and head east across the parking lot. You will find a path, which had been an old driveway. Rather than going downhill as it curves, bear left and look northeast. Locate a large tree standing at the beginning of a tree line. Head to it. Unless it’s the dead of winter, you will recognize the tree as a maple.

Follow the tree line north. The tree line will end, but continue traveling north. When you can go no further, turn the bend and begin counting 10 paces. You will see a downed tree that is laying in four pieces. Under the base of the fourth log, you will find your prize. Hide well after stamping. Return the way you came. If you locate the path going up the hill, you will get back to your destination more quickly. You are in a beautiful expanse of land, so take the time to enjoy the view.
