Ospreys are one of the largest birds of prey in North America. Osprey eat fish almost exclusively, and the ospreys referred to here fish in the Russian River. The Osprey is one of the most widespread birds in the world, found on all continents except Antarctica. There are a number of websites which feature ospreys. Here is one:

This journey to the Old River Osprey Letterbox takes you past an osprey nest, a big messy looking structure high in an old dead tree. Unfortunately, you only get a glimpse of the nest as you drive past and there is nowhere near to park. Hopefully, you’ll have no trouble spotting the nest. To see the nest take the Hwy 101 exit to Talmage. Just before the big golden arches turn right onto Old River Road. Look for Mill Creek Road shortly on your left. Continue along Old River Road 5.7 miles further. Look up and to your right for a tall dead tree with a big, sloppy looking nest at the top.

Continue driving for some time on Old River Road. Right past the 4.52 mile marker look on your right for a big rock outcropping (Should you reach Old Hopland you’ve driven too far.). Park and head for the rock. Walk around the back side to the twin oak tree. Stand with your back to the tree facing the rock. Walk about eleven steps at 20 degrees. Note on your right waist to shoulder high a small rock cave. Reach in moving rocks aside maybe 2 1/2 feet in. Under the rocks you should find the Old River Osprey Letterbox.

Replace rocks carefully so box is completely hidden. Thanks for coming!!
