Every now and then, it's necessary to visit a place that reminds one of great cosmic forces and a little eternity. The Disturbance is just such a place, specifically the Blue Rock at Nugget Lake County Park in Pierce County, Wisconsin. It is believed that a great meteor impact some 400 million years ago caused the deformations here. Adding to the mystery are stories of people finding gold and diamonds in the vicinity. On one of my visits, panners in waders were setting out down the creek.
This is a lovely park with many hiking trails in varying degrees of difficulty and you can acquire a map when you stop to pay your five-dollar fee at the park office. Drive then toward the lake and recreation area. Park at the first parking area you encounter and note the trail signs leading you to the Underlook and Overlook. Go to the Underlook first as this is where you will encounter the Blue Rock and can read about the meteor impact. You will also likely encounter a languid frog or six in the primal pool beneath the tilted rocks.
Head back then to the trail leading you to the Overlook and pause to look out over the little valley. Continue to follow this trail out of the woods then and turn right to follow it up the hill and into the trees again for another 50 steps or so. There will be a clump of large trees on your left and the letterbox is hidden in its base. Please rehide well as it isn't far off the trail!
