The Octagon is a series of eight letterboxes, each box gets progressively more difficult to find than the one preceding it. This is a multi-state letterbox.

Each box yields clues or instructions needed to find the next box.

The first box is located in the White Mountains.

Begin at the Pinkham Notch Base Camp located on N.H. RTE. 16. Follow the Tuckerman's Ravine Trail for just over a mile. You will see a trail intersection marked by a wooden sign. The sign reads 'Raymond Path' and branches off to the right. Follow Raymond Path for about 20 feet. There on your left is a large rectangular shaped boulder. At the base of this boulder is a smaller rock about a foot long that has been wedged beneath the boulder. Carefully remove this rock and you will find the letterbox behind it.

The letterbox is the size of a deck of cards and double wrapped in plastic, within it are instructions on how to obtain your next clue. Please remove the box carefully, so others will not notice. It is a great place to relax and wait for the trail traffic to subside. Don't forget to sign your name with the pencil provided and replace the box as you found it.

Enjoy the fresh air and spectacular mountain views while you're up there, much more awaits you on this quest. Your journey has only begun.
