Trail Difficulty – Really Easy
Clue Difficulty – Easy

Status: Alive and Well as of 3/31/05

Directions to Trailhead:
Take Interstate 5 to the Merlin exit, #61, 3 miles north of Grants Pass. Head west on Merlin-Galice Road through the town of Merlin. Stay on this road and you will come to the Hellgate Canyon Bridge. You should stop and check out the view if you have never seen it! Continue on and you will pass Indian Mary Park on your right and then come to Morrison's Lodge also on your right. Just around the next turn is Briggs Valley Road 25. Turn left here and drive 12.5 miles to Big Pine Campground on your right. Turn in here and park in the day-use area at the trailhead. There might be a day-use fee but we didn't have to pay because there was no one around.

To find the letterbox:
This trail was too easy so we decided to make finding the letterbox a little more of a challenge. You will understand this better when you decide to take this challenge. At the trailhead you will find a map of all the trails. Take the main trail straight until you get to the Challenge Loop. Staying to the right, follow this trail ignoring the "bridge out" warning. (if it is still there) The trail will slope down to the right and then to the left coming to a seasonal creek bed where the bridge is washed out but simple to cross when the creek is dry. It could be a bit tricky if there is water in the creek. When you get to Taylor Camp Trail #1138, take this trail to the right. You will pass a fallen tree on your right and eventually come to a spot where two small trails branch off in each direction directly across from each other. Take the trail to the left and go about 30-35 feet. Stop and turn 90 degrees to your right. You should see a large tree that looks like it was hit by lightning. About 5 feet up on the short part of the tree is a hole and in that hole is part of what you are looking for. The hole may be hard to see but it is there covered with a chunk of tree that fits quite nicely into the hole. (Be sure to replace the chunk of wood.)
