Our children are fascinated with the PORTSMOUTH HARBOR LIGHTHOUSE situated next to Fort Constitution in New Castle, NH. We even were fortunate enough to take a tour inside and learn of its fascinating history.
Since the Fort and the Lighthouse are actually on US Coast Guard property, we thought it best NOT to put our stamp there. Instead we decided to hide it on best beach in the state. The New Castle Common is nestled behind the town offices and offers 32 acres of scenic beauty and fun on NH's Seacoast. A small fee in the summer gets you into the park (it's free in the off-season) but it's so worth it b/c there aren't enormous crowds like at our other beaches.
Once you enter the park, follow the traffic signs that guide you to the right, circling the park. No parking on the grass, but ample parking is available near the bathhouse, across from the playground.
Make your way to the concrete pier constructed by the Army when the park was actually known as Camp Langdon. Just prior to the pier, you'll find a compass on the ground. Facing North-East, you'll get a peek at the beauty of the white Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse. (Whaleback Lighthouse is the brick one, almost due East from the compass and is actually in Maine.)
10 paces North-East from the compass, you'll find a large flat white rock, surrounded by many smaller rocks, as well as a few pieces of concrete. It is here that you'll find a view from the water of the Lighthouse, as well as the Keeper's House and the Fort.
