Mission Street Boat Launch

Directions

Find Sault Ste. Marie, MI. From I-75 you can take the last exit before the International Bridge. This exit dumps you onto Easterday Ave, turn left. Once you are on Easterday, head away from the downtown (away from the college, past the overpass... go west). Once you reach the stop sign with a blinking light, turn right. A left would take you southbound on I-75. This road (Eureka which merges into Meridian) will eventually merge/curve into Portage Ave, near West Pier (great local lunch spot). “Turn” right onto Portage Avenue. Continue down Portage through the fudgie (tourist) area of town, past the Tower of History, past Edison Sault over the power canal. Continue heading in this direction, towards the Sugar Island Ferry. Turn left into the Mission Street Boat Launch parking lot across from Woody’s Convenience Store (red in color) and just before Aune-Osborn Park. It is just past the wastewater treatment plant. If you reach the Sugar Island Ferry, Clydes Restaurant, Rotary Park, or the country club, you have gone too far and should turn around.

Clues

Time- 10-15 minutes at the most/drive by

Once you have parked your vehicle or other mode of transportation, stretch your legs and head to the park bench located farthest the farthest to the west.

Take a seat and enjoy the view of Canada. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to observe a passing freighter.

Walk to the small stump in front of you, near the ledge.

Walk westward down the ledge, not more than 4-5 steps.

If you have gone more than a third of the way down towards the water, you have gone too far.

Above and east of rocks surrounded by moss you will find your treasure. You can reach your treasures, while sitting on a rock and some moss and reaching westward.

The box is in the crevice formed by several rocks. The most noticeable is roughly 2 foot by 2 foot square with a fairly flat and smooth side facing the river. It is covered in fallen objects that once provided shade. Move the grey rock to find the box.

2016 update: There are two benches now, sit on the one closest to the Canadian Bridge and furthest from Rotary Park.

The stumps have been mostly leveled. The one that best fits you has multiple little shoots/trunks going upwards. It is almost in front of a tree growing on the slope.

The letterbox is just to the Canadian Bridge/Water Treatment Facility side of the tree. Depending on the time of the day, it may even be in shadow. The rock you move is light gray/white. The larger rock above it is dark gray.

Sit on the moss and smooth gravel. I did not see any fallen leaves about this time of year.
