Algonquin Cross Country Ski Pathway

Directions

Find Sault Ste. Marie, MI. From I-75 you can take the last exit before the international bridge. This exit dumps you onto Easterday Ave, turn left. Once you are on Easterday, head away from the downtown (away from the college, past the overpass, and on towards the Algonquin area.. go west). If you came from the highway, you will go through a 3 way stop near a gas station, continue strait. Easterday will turn into W. 4th Ave at the blinking light near the recycling center. Continue strait. You will reach a 3 way stop near the train tracks. Continue strait, if you were to turn you would wind up at Sherman Park, a great place to bring children. The road changes to Oak at this point. Continue on past the curve and over the train tracks. Turn left onto 18th (to avoid ending up in the residential area) and go 1.1-1.2 miles. Parking for the Algonquin ski trail is on the left. Watch the large bump!

Location

Algonquin Cross Country Ski Pathway is located in a heavily wooded area in the western section of Sault Ste. Marie. It contains three separate loops of well groomed trails totaling eight miles. The first loop lighted for night skiing. For more call information 1-800-MI-SAULT. Bring mosquito spray if it is summer and your ski’s if it is winter. Note that there are no dogs allowed on the groomed ski trail.

Clues

This trek will take 1.5 plus hours. It will take more time if you continue on and do more of the loop (highly recommended). Note that the directions were created during the summer but you should be able to find the boxes on skis in the winter. The trails are groomed and none of the boxes are on the forest floor.

From the parking lot walk to the trail head.

Go right on the trail.

Past a bench you will travel.

Reach a Y and cross a footbridge (about 10-15 minutes into your journey if walking)

In a wink you will reach point 2.

Go forward to point 3, do not turn and take loop A.

Go forward from point 3 to point 4.

From point 3 go 70 steps to a leaning pine on the left.

Go 85 steps to a 6 armed maple that appears to have fingers (on the right side of the trail).

The first box is in the heart of a 6 armed maple, with an extra arm for good luck, on your right. You will need to walk behind the tree to find a hole large enough to remove the box.

167 steps to the bridge.

Cross the bridge and another.

Approach a gate, avoid the snowmobilers or dirt bikers, and pass through another gate.

In a few moments you will reach point 4.

Go towards point 13.

From point 4 go 19 steps to a no snowmobiling sign.

Go 130 steps to a 7 trunked birch.

Go 44 steps to a solitary maple near a pine.

Go 105 steps to the slightly leaning tree.

Go another 155 to a 6 trunked birch on the right.

Go another 56 to a 7 trunked birch on the right.

Go 90 more steps to a 3 trunked (tall) maple on the right.
It is surrounded by pine treas. The box is in the heart of the maple. This is just before the tall stumps and before the no snowmobiling sign. You can also backtrack 52 steps from the no snowmobiling sign to locate the maple.

You may continue on or turn around. I suggest going to point 13, cutting across to point 5 and then heading back to point 4.
