Box 1: "Leaf Project"

Children often are assigned "leaf projects" for their science classes during elementary school here in the State-line, and many of these students will find their way to the Stephenson County Historical Museum to find assorted leaves to add to their displays since so many varieties of trees are featured around the museum yards.

We decided to hide a leaf stamp for you to find and add to your note-pad display of unique impressions. Here are your clues:

Take South St. to Carroll Ave. (North) - Carroll Ave. is between Chicago Ave. (if you're eastbound) & Float Ave. (if you're westbound). Drive a few short blocks down Carroll Ave., and you will see the Stephenson County Historical Museum to the West. If you've reached Empire St., you've gone too far.

Turn into the driveway and park in the 2nd circle drive behind the main building by pulling in front of the Carriage House/Museum Office entrance. When you get out of your vehicle, look straight ahead and you will see the main museum house. Under the steps on the right side, positioned under about the 3rd step, you will find the new location for this letterbox. (Thank you to the ones who alerted us to the fact that the original hiding place is soon going to be 'dug up' and replanted with flowers instead of bushes; so we were able to rehide this box just in time to avoid having it become lost or destroyed.)

Before you head off to find an ice-cream cone, if the museum is open, why not take a tour to learn more about the history of Stephenson county...

Box 2: "Ice-Cream Cone"

Alber's Ice Cream Parlor AKA Union Dairy Farms is a well known Freeport hang-out for young and old alike during ice-cream season. "Union Dairy," as the locals call it, is a quaint, old-style ice-cream parlor, located on Douglas St. AKA IL 75 E at the edge of downtown Freeport right next to the Lincoln Douglas Debate Square. You can read about this famous debate as you take a stroll through Debate Square while you enjoy your choice flavor of Cedarcrest Ice-Cream.

Thank you to all who alerted us that the ice-cream cone stamp had gone missing. We were able to carve a new stamp today - on Labor Day, 09/06/10 - and rehide it. There are 'two scoops' instead of 'three' like the original stamp had, and the hiding place is new; so hopefully, this one won't 'melt away.'

Don't forget to check out our "100th day of school" stamp that's hidden in the library to the West of Debate Square and Union Dairy while you're in the area.

Clues: Park in the lot off of Douglas Street, either across from Union Dairy or next to the parlor. Instead of hiding the remake in Debate Square again, we will take you to another local gem --- Head North through the parking lot, on foot, in between the Square and the Dairy toward the steps.

Cross the street, and you will see the McNess General Store. Feel free to look in the shop on Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., and you may wish to purchase some real Vanilla flavoring or other items to use for yourself or as gifts when you're through browsing.

To the right of the cement/pebble planter wall box there will be an enclosed bus-stop type rest area. To the left of this enclosure about 3 feet toward the left along the building and under the shrubs in about 2 feet, you'll find our 2nd ice cream cone stamp. Hope this one sticks around longer than the last one did!

Box 3: "Winter Time"

Winter Park is one of the many fabulous parks that Freeport has to offer. Many have heard about and visited Krape Park, but few, we're guessing have checked out Winter Park... At the intersection of Park Blvd. and Stephenson Street, take Stephenson St. West. After admiring some magnificent homes off to your left, you'll pass Bethany. Up ahead just a bit after Calvary Cemetery on your right, you'll see Greenfield Drive. Take Greenfield Dr. North. Just a little ways up the road, take Bedford West. You'll be in a residential area, and after seven houses on your left, you'll see the sign for Winter Park. Pull into the small lot and park your vehicle.

Clues: To find your "Winter Time" stamp with snow-flakes, walk down the bike path. You'll see a fork, but continue going straight rather than turning left. Walk until you see 3 pine trees off to your right that form a straight line. Under the third tree, then, "snow flakes" you'll find. :)

Please be sure to carefully seal the baggies and boxes and re-hide all of the stamps that you've found during your letterboxing hunt today. Thank you for taking the time to add our stamp creations to your note pads and sharing your cool stamp impressions in ours!

On a side note: The stamps today were designed in part by an 11 and a 12 year old who are both excited about this new found hobby that we just recently discovered!

Happy Letterboxing! :)
