Cougar Mountain is a lovely place for short, long, easy or difficult hikes. You can do any sort of loop to accommodate your preferences, and it’s great for kids. This letterbox will take you on an approximately 4 mile loop.
Because we like puzzles, and because the Cougar Mountain trails are so well-marked, we have decided to make it more interesting for you by anagramming each trail name. An anagram is a rearrangment of the letters of a word (or phrase, in this case). So, you will need to figure out the name of each trail for these instructions to make sense! Anagrammed phrases are written in ALL CAPS.
Start at the TWO NERD Trailhead at URANIUM OCTAGON Park. This is on Lakemont Blvd in Newcastle, near I-90. There is parking at the trailhead, although it can get quite busy. Follow signs to NITRATE WORLD and hike along until it intersects with ACHIEVER ATOLL. Look out for slugs and interesting red-backed beetles on this trail. Follow LEECH OVA until you reach the intersection with ALL FOLLIES RACETRACK on the right. This trail takes you past a lovely waterfall or, in drier times, a rocky area to climb up just past the bridge.
After enjoying the scenery for a while, continue on until the trail T’s onto LATER HARRY QUIT. Turn left and follow to RADIATED FRIAR ROLLS; turn left. Watch out for abandoned mine shafts, marked and fenced off from time to time in this area, and be sure to follow posted safety warnings. Continue until you see a tree on the right side that has six main branching trunks and a lot of moss on them. The tree is within fifty yards of the intersection with A STRIPY SLAB, so if you get to that intersection, you’ve gone too far! The letterbox is in the hollow on the north side of the base of the tree.
After finding and replacing the letterbox, you can continue left onto SYBILS APART, right and then left onto MORTAL ISLAND, and left on HOKIER LATRINES to take you back to EACH LOVE and back the way you came.
