WE LOVE FALL! Which brings us to the topic of our favorite fall activity (aside from letterboxing) APPLE PICKING! To do this LB you don't have to pay or pick apples, HOWEVER, we HIGHLY encourage it. Also, available from this wonderful family operated (The Hoffmans) farm... are some of our other fall favorites: gourds, pumpkins, squash and delicious cider doughnuts! YUM! Getting there:
From the North – Follow Rt 30A from Johnstown south about 3 miles. Turn
right onto Commons Road go about 1.8 miles to the intersection of Martin Road
and Commons Road.
From the East – NY Thruway to exit 28, left on to Riverside Drive about 1.5 miles. Turn right onto Rt 30A, you will go over the Mohawk River and pass Fonda Speadway. Turn left onto Rt 5, go through the village of Fonda, about .5 miles. Turn right onto Rt 334/ Cayadutta St. follow for 1.9 miles. Turn left on to Commons Road go about .1 mile to the intersection of Martin Road and Commons Road.
OR
Follow Rt 5 west to Fonda, go through the village of Fonda, about .5 miles. Turn right onto Rt 334/ Cayadutta St. follow for 1.9 miles. Turn left on to Commons Road go about .1 mile to the intersection of Martin Road and Commons Road.
From the South – Follow the directions from the East if using the NY Thruway.
Follow Rt 30A to Fultonville, you will go over the Mohawk River and pass Fonda Speadway. Turn left onto Rt 5, go through the village of Fonda, about .5 miles. Turn right onto Rt 334/ Cayadutta St. follow for 1.9 miles. Turn left on to Commons Road go about .1 mile to the intersection of Martin Road and Commons Road.
Once at Sand Flats, find your way to the apple orchards. Walk past the red barn (1884) on the left and head toward a line of trees. Take a right here. Follow along the tree line heading toward the orchard, but stop when you come to the outdoor fire pit. Look to your left and you should find a faint opening in the evergreen trees. Head in there (approximately 12-15 steps from the corner of the fire pit). Turning to your right, you will find a few steps ahead (between the base of a living tree and a stump), under a rock and a SPOPC (suspicious pile of pine cones!!!), you will find that which you seek.
Remember to enjoy a tasty fall treat!
