Sometime in the 1890’s, when the first settlers stepped onto the banks of Turkey Creek in the panhandle of Texas, they found there flocks of wild Rio Grande turkeys roosting there. Soon, the settlement of Turkey Roost was formed. Between farming the fertile soil and the abundant wild game, including turkey, deer and buffalo, life was good. The name was shortened to simply Turkey, Texas when the post office (the dug-out of Alfred P. Hall, postmaster) was granted in 1893.

Turkey is best known as the home of Bob Wills, the King of Western Swing. Wills was a barber in Turkey during the 1920's. Wills formed The Texas Playboys and their music introduced a new offshoot of county-western music known as “Western Swing.”

The former Turkey school buildings were purchased by The Bob Wills Foundation and city offices, the library, a senior citizens room, and the Bob Wills Museum are located in the former grade school building. The Foundation has built a Bob Wills monument and Bob Wills Park. The annual Bob Wills Day Festival draws ten thousand to the town the last Saturday in April.

Major crops are cotton, watermelons, peanuts, and sweet potatoes. In fact, sweet potatoes from Turkey are prized for their quailty and superior taste to this day.
CLUE:
This box is located in a little "pocket park" in downtown Turkey Texas. This is a friendly little community! We travel here often to have great Mexican food at Galvan's. If you get a chance check them out! Also if you would like to stay a spell check out the Hotel Turkey....Nice little B&B.
As you travel down Hwy 86 headed east from Quitaque Texas you will find the small town of Turkey. Drive down the main street of Turkey (Hwy 86). You will find the little park on you right after you pass second street. Walk up into the park through the arch on the east side. Walk into the park along the walkway and go to the back wall. After you cross under the back arch you will turn to your right. There are two little boxwood bushes along the back wall. You want the one further to the west. Your box is under this little bush. Be careful the locals don’t know it’s there. The little park is public. Just enjoy yourself!
