We visited this box today (8/27/10) and found it in its place. HOWEVER, we also found that someone had used it for TARGET PRACTICE with a .22. We have removed the box and hope to replace it soon. In the meantime, I still recommend climbing this beautiful little mountain!
------------------------------------------------------------
This is a moderate climb that takes about an hour and is quite steep in some parts.

Take Rt. 3 to Silver Lake Road. Turn onto Silver Lake Road. Continue past the small settlement of Hawkeye at the end of Silver Lake. Shortly past this on the left side of the road is the parking area and trailhead for Silver Lake Mountain.

Part way up the mountain, there is a large rock beside the trail. There is a lone tree with a low branch protruding toward the rock. Just beyond this the trail turns abruptly to the right and goes sharply up a rocky incline. Be careful not to miss this turn!

Upon reaching the summit, turn your back to the view and look back onto the mountain. To your left will be two pine trees, a large one and a smaller one, which form a V shape. Walk past these trees to a fallen log that is on the ground. The box is under this log. Please be sure to seal and cover it well when you replace it. Enjoy!

Why "KIN OF CAIN"? KIN OF CAIN is a novel by Douglas Kashorek. The setting for this intriguing novel is partially in the town of Lyon Mountain, partially in Hawkeye, and partially WITHIN Silver Lake Mountain. KIN OF CAIN is to come out sometime in the spring or summer of 2010.
