MERRYMEETING RIVER RUNNER

The Merrymeeting River Runner can be found on the trail below the dam on Letter S Road in Alton, NH.

From Main Street in Alton, follow Route 140 West .3 miles to Letter S Road, directly across from the Alton Fire Station. Take a right onto Letter S Road and follow for .3 miles to a small parking area on the left just above the dam on the Merrymeeting River. Park here. On the right hand side of the parking area is the entrance to a trail that follows the river. Enter the trail and follow it until you come to the remains of an old building on your left. Directly across the trail from the building is a large downed tree that has fallen into the woods, the end of which has been cut to keep it clear from the trail. Follow along left hand side of this downed tree to its far end which falls near a small beech tree and a small white birch. The River Runner is hiding underneath a pile of sticks and leaves near the edge of the downed tree closest to the small beech.

Return to your car the way you came or continue a short way down the trail to a grassy area near the river (also near the parking area for Jones Field, a.k.a. "Little Fenway") that is a great place for a picnic or snack. If you continue into the dirt parking lot and cross the bridge on your left into the field area, there is a small playground for any kids you may have with you.
