This box is on the trail to Catamount Mountain in the Adirondacks. To find the box and return to the road takes about 20-30 minutes, but we suggest you plan to make the full climb to the summit of Catamount with its spectacular views.

To get to Catamount: From the town of Wilmington, NY (12 miles north of Lake Placid), take the Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway. At the actual toll gate (which lead to the summit of Whiteface), stay to the right and continue to a Junction 6.9 miles from Wilmington. Turn Right and continue to the Plank Road Intersection at 7.0 miles. Take a right and continue for 2.1 miles.

A the bottom of long gradual downhill slope (2.1 miles from the above intersection), slow down and look for some RED (or possibly yellow) surveyors tape on the left hend side of the road. THIS MARKS THE TRAILHEAD.

Start at the red trail marker for Catamount and enter the trail. Register at the NYSDEC logbook on your left. You will be entering a pine forest. Continue as the path makes several s-curves. You will see a log running parallel to the path on your left. Then the trail begins the first mild uphill ascent. Look for a 3 sister maple tree on the right. The path curves to the right at the top of the rise and levels out. You will see a 2 sister birch tree on the right. At this point take six steps across the path to the left from the tree and you will see a tree stump and fallen tree. Ahead of you will be a yellow posted sign. Inside the stump is the letterbox.
