Captain Thompson and crew aboard the sailing ship "What Cheer" departed from San Francisco in 1859. Along the way the captain died of small pox and was buried on the beach west of Diamond Point, WA.
DIRECTIONS:
From Highway 101 take the Diamond Point Road (approximately 9 miles east of Sequim). Travel about 4 miles to Diamond Shore Rd. N, then to Beach Road, then to Access Road.
Walk west (left) on the beach approximately 1 1/2 miles until you reach the tree at the end of Thompsom spit. Have a rest and enjoy the view! From there walk 300 paces on a heading of SE 320 degrees. You will come to the Captains gravesite complete with a wooden cross-surrounded by an iron railing. At the foot of the grave take 7 paces NNE 10 degrees. Look for the box in a hollowed beach log guarded by 2 rocks.
