Labadie was established June 7, 1855, on land originally given by Spanish Land Grant to Sylvester Labbadie, Jr. in 1850. This quaint town is a dining destination today due to a great restaurant tradition. It is well known in the St. Louis area for its fine restaurants. Sometimes overlooked, except by the locals, is the Little Market, a great little deli/store. The have some of the best sandwiches you'll find anywhere (try the brisket), great ice cream, beer, gas, a few groceries, and some tables where the locals gather for coffee and rolls in the mornings.
Inside if you follow the clue you'll find your prize. Our stamp is taken from a painting and mural by Brian Haynes, a renowned artist from Labadie. You can see the actual mural above the bar at the Hawthorne Inn (our favorite restaurant) across the street. It depicts the history of Labadie and the untimely end of Sylvester Labbadie, a miller and fur trader, from whom the town takes its name. According to Haynes, the story of Sylvester and the Bear takes quite a bit of historic license. It's true that the skeleton of a bear and a man were discovered in a nearby cave. However, the human skeleton was in truth most likely an early native American, but the myth has been too good to ignore.
To find your prize head to Front Street and head for the Little Market. Inside go to the back, on the left back wall you will see a three section refrigerated case. Look under it, behind the block for your prize. Please be discrete and and take time to re hide well when you are finished. You can do your letterboxing on a counter in the back, at a table if there aren't a lot of people around, or get a treat or beverage and take it outside to the picnic table.
