Went to check on this box and it had disappeared. Plan to plant a new one at some point, but haven't had the opportunity to make the climb again. Don't look for it while this message is here!

This box is not for the faint-of-heart, as it involves a fairly strenuous climb of about 2 1/2 hours (up only- down is a little quicker!) Make sure you wear good hiking shoes and bring plenty of drinking water and insect repellent!

To reach the trailhead for Lyon Mountain from the Plattsburgh area, take Route 374 west around Chazy Lake to Chazy Lake Road (County Rt. 8). Drive 1.8 miles on Chazy Lake Road to an unnamed gravel road on the right. At the beginning of the gravel road is a black and white sign indicating it is a seasonal, limited-use highway with no maintenance from No. 1- May 1. Follow the gravel road about 1 mile to the parking area.

There is a new trail on the mountain that is less steep and rocky than the original trail, although much longer due to many switchbacks. This trail is very well made, but was quite muddy! Near the end, the new trail joins the original one and is quite steep. We were hiking through rocks with water running through them. At this point, make sure to turn around and look back at the beautiful view of Chazy Lake!

At the top of Lyon Mountain is a fire tower. After you go to the top to enjoy the breathtaking view, stand at the base of the fire tower and locate the windmills in the distance. Look a little to the right, and you will see a clear area leading to the edge of the mountain. In the middle of this clear area, a lone conifer rises up from the base of a large rock. Go down the rock to find the bottom of the tree. You will find the letterbox on the ground under the flat bottom branches of this tree.

Be safe and enjoy the hike!
