Enter Colonial Greenway – “Sheldrake River Trails” / “Leatherstocking Trail” - on Rockland Avenue in Larchmont. Rockland Avenue runs between Weaver Street (Rt 125) in Larchmont and Boston Post Road (Rt 1) in Mamaroneck. The trail entrance is next to a stone bridge. The trail entrance is almost directly across the street from #87 Rockland Avenue (.2 miles from Rt. 125 and 1.2 miles from Rt. 1). There are trail entrances on either side of the bridge; be sure to enter the trail on the side of the bridge closest to Weaver Street. At the beginning of the trail you will see a sign that includes a map and reads Colonial Greenway, Sheldrake River Trails, and Leatherstocking Trail. On the other side of the bridge is trail marker “G”. Do not enter the trail here. After a short distance following the trail you will see a fork. Stay to your right. The stream should be on your immediate right. Continue following the trail and you will cross a little wooden bridge. You will then pass marker “C” on your right. Continue following the trail until you reach an intersection. Make a left. Do not turn right at this intersection and cross the wooden bridge. Continue straight on the trail and pass marker ”E” on your left. After crossing over a little stream running through a concrete pipe (which may be dry in the summer months), continue a short distance and then make a left turn. You will know that you have missed the left turn and have gone too far if you reach a trash can (at a point where the trail runs parallel to a road). Once you make the left turn, you will come to a fork in the trail. Bear right and go up a steep hill. On the right side of the hill about half way up is a large rock. Climb on the rock and find Argus’s letter box hidden in a crack.
