Among Wisconsin's many attractions, Rustic Roads are my favorite. This letterbox pays homage to the ubiquitous wildflower found in their ditches. (Note: As of July 4, 2013, there is a new stamp in this letterbox, portraying fauna rather than flora:) I have left the old logbook in the box, so friends can revisit this popular letterbox and site.)
Just south of Maiden Rock, take County Road AA off the Great River Road (Highway 35.) Turn right at the first intersection and park on the shoulder just after you cross the bridge. Walk back to the bridge and look out to your right upon a little piece of heaven--the Pine Creek Restoration undertaken by the West Wisconsin Land Trust. Follow the fly fishermen's trail behind the railing and beside the creek. (Please be careful--the path can be overgrown in the summer and there are many rocks.) Just before you reach the little waterfall, there will be a cluster of saplings on your right. The letterbox is behind a mossy rock at the base of the central grouping. PLEASE rehide well!
Back on the road, be sure to follow the Rustic Road as it turns to the left. This is one of the loveliest I have travelled and will take you through Pine Creek where it crosses the road in several places! This is a nesting ground for many Wisconsin songbirds. Travel slowly as the road is narrow and not well-maintained. It is closed in the winter.
There is a photo clue posted on atlasquest.
