As the race was on to build a rail to the west coast, this line went through the mountains of Colorado. It was a narrow gauge and ran up the mountain of a very narrow bed. Several places it had to be reinforced with several stone walls. The narrow rails ran at a steep grade. Two of the water tanks are still on the trail.

If you take 50 in Colorado to Parlin, which is between Gunnison and Salida. Take the only road north (highway 76. This will take you through several small towns. After Pitkin you will take the road to the Alpine Tunnel. Beware it is a single lane and would be better if you had a 4 wheel drive vehicle. (not open in winter) When you get to the top park in the lot and walk on into the valley. Enjoy the history and talk to the rangers that are there on Friday through Monday. They have some great stories. As you approach the actual tunnel you start to see the timbers that where part of the walls of the tunnel. Right up near the opening you will see 4 square timbers to your right. Three that point up closer to the tunnel entrance and one that points out toward you. Look under it and you will find a Christmas tin. Please let us know if it is still there we are not in the area very much.
